TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

In any subject matter, there are two parts that must be mastered. First is the theory. Second is the application. Therefore, students must first understand the relevant theories, thoughts and concepts in relation to the subjects taught. Just knowing the theory is less meaningful. Ability to apply and practise will give the completeness.

In the process of learning and educating, I will explain the theories and concepts as well as their respective advantages and handicaps. Naturally, not all theories are sound and of good use. I believe that students must first understand them. Without good understanding the application part will be more difficult. That is why, we have some students who are good at memorising, eventually failed at applying them to a given scenario.

To facilitate understanding, I will have to engage in creativity exercise. A number of illustrations will be given as I appreciate that the degree, level and rate of understandings are varying from one student to another. To be able to do that, I must be well prepared and comprehend the subjects fully long before hand. My notes are crystal clear and updated. I also employ E-Learning techniques where my students can look at some relevant materials through my website. It is also interactive. This electronic method is useful especially to my postgraduate students as they stay far away from the campus. I could respond to their queries on-line.

Learning and education involve management. I must firstly manage myself and students must see that. Otherwise, respect will not be accorded. Secondly is to manage the students. It is important as time is limited. Students must graduate within time, works must be submitted within time and time is of the essence. I have seen many deplorable scenario among colleagues where management is not given importance.

I personally give importance to research and writing activities. As much as possible I publish. This is the avenue of putting ourselves in the map of authorities and being recognised. I encouraged my students to write well and present papers in seminars as well as publishing their works. The value of honesty in academic and in life is strongly instilled. With this only they will be truly successful. I would be equally successful.

As a Muslim, our civilisation history is so long and coloured with excellence. Many Muslims today are historically romantic. It is less helpful by just being clinging to the previous glory. For me, I want to take part in history making. I want to participate in civilisation development. With that I am sure, I will be useful and my students will also be useful. The university will be a more meaningful learning and educating place.
